Preserving a Sense of Time and Place (by Janie Chilcote)

The Preservation Roundtable, comprised of Executive Directors of preservation non-profits from across Texas met for their quarterly meeting in Dallas on June 20, 2002. Topics discussed included national and statewide advocacy efforts to support preservation legislation, such as the Historic Homeowners Tax Credit and funding for the Historic Preservation Fund. Janie Chilcote and Suzy Davis represented Historic Tyler at the day-long event sponsored by Preservation Texas, Inc.

The Texas Historical Commission sponsored a workshop for East Texans on August 27, 2002, at Tyler's Rose Garden Center. Topics included cemetery preservation, benefits of historic designations, preserving Black history, archaeology and fund-raising. Attending from Historic Tyler were True Magruder, Ron and Suzy Davis, Tana Kay, Mike Carmichael, David Hudson, Bobbie Lovelady and Janie Chilcote.

A workshop on marketing historic properties was held on September 10, 2001 in Marshall, Texas, with Carrol and Mollie Bobo of United Country Realty, Tyler, and HTI Executive Director Janie Chilcote attending. Sponsored by Preservation Texas, Inc., the day-long seminar provided Texas real estate brokers, salespersons, buyers, sellers and preservationists accurate information about the acquisition, restoration and topics related to buying, selling, and preserving historic properties. Class facilitator was Ralph Tamper of the Real Estate School and seven instructional hours of required MCE credit were given to realtors.

"It was an excellent workshop which shared information on a variety of useful topics including the economic benefits of marketing and selling historic properties, the history of architectural styles, and the principles of historic preservation," said Carrol Bobo.

"Probably the most informative part of the day for me was learning about historic marker designations and what responsibilities they confer upon the homeowner, " he added.

"Discussing the preferred methods of restoring historic properties and utilizing tax credits for commercial properties was helpful since we recently sold Charnwood Hill to a group of lawyers," stated Mollie Bobo.

Historic Tyler is planning to co-sponsor with Preservation Texas a similar workshop for Tyler realtors in January, 2002. The Bobos will be chairmen for the event, with local realtors able to earn Continuing Education Units for participation. For more information, contact the Historic Tyler office at 595-1960.
