Home goodman.jpgPreservation means nothing more, nor less, than taking care of something, keeping it in good repair, and protecting it from destructive forces. Preservation may involve taking care of things we own, such as our homes, furniture, the landscape in our yards, or a painting. It can also involve taking care of things we do not own such as a museum, a park, a public building, a cemetery, a collection at the library, or the combination of buildings and streets that make up downtown. Preservation concerns our need to belong, to have roots, to preserve some sense of continuity in a changing world. Preservation is a basic ethic by which our lives and the area in which we live can be given form meaning, substance, and direction.
