Letter to Azalea Historic District Property Owners
Encourage owners to apply for a National Historic Marker and to join Historic Tyler as a Member.
October 20, 2003
Dear Azalea District Property Owner:
Congratulations on being the owner of property in Tyler’s Azalea Residential Historic District that was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on June 23, 2003. Being listed on the National Register imposes no restrictions on property owners, but can benefit homeowners by creating a sense of neighborhood, reducing crime, increasing heritage tourism and improving property values.
The Azalea Historic District contains 1,611 properties, with 1,046 listed as structures that “contribute” to the historic character of the district, including residences, commercial buildings, garages, servant’s quarters, garage apartments, duplexes, landscaping features and brick streets. Historic Tyler, Inc. is enclosing an application form for ordering a National Register of Historic Places Plaque for properties that are eligible. Historic property meets the criteria by being at least fifty years old, unaltered (on the exterior) or altered in a manner consistent with the Department of the Interior guidelines. To determine your property’s eligibility you may refer to the Azalea District nomination on file at the Tyler Public Library, go online at historictyler.org or call the Historic Tyler office at 903-595-1960.
Historic Tyler, Inc. has coordinated efforts since 1994 to research and document thousands of historic properties in Tyler culminating in listing hundreds of properties on the National Register and historic districts such as Charnwood. If you are not currently a member of Historic Tyler, Inc., we invite you to join now. A brochure with a membership form is enclosed. We are a committed group of over 600 preservationists working since 1977 to “preserve and protect Tyler’s historic resources through education, advocacy and private and public involvement.”
If you have questions, please contact the Historic Tyler office at 903-595-1960.
Sincerely,
Dr. Ron Davis Mrs. Hal Cameron
